everything that everyone knows or believes came out of a book

everything that everyone knows or believes came out of a book

This is a thought I have been rattling around in my head for a while and I think it has peculated long enough that its ready for sharing.

A lot of atheists that I have heard speak are really critical of the Bible as the source of faith that fuels Christian beliefs. Now I must warn that I am going to be painting with a fairly wide brush in this post as I make some broad generalizations, but even with that said I think my point will stick to the wall quite nicely. First lets assume we are speaking of the kind of atheists that run with the science crowd believing that nothing created everything in the big bang and that we all evolved out of a puddle over the course of the last few billion years. Where does that information come from?

In a lot of cases that information comes out of books. Books that have been recorded through out history as scientists have conducted studies and experiments. Those books have then been leveraged to write other books, some of them most likely translated from other languages over time. Those books have been used to formulate science class curriculum for students. Some books are even made into educational videos for T.V. and used in class rooms and labs to teach other people what science has revealed.

So here is my point. Everyone believes in a book. So many people in the “science camp” believe what science has to tell them without having seen the results of an experiment or study with their own eyes.  That sounds a little like faith to me. They haven’t looked in the microscope, seen the mutation of cells or understood what carbon dating even means but they rest easy that what they are told or what is in the books is true. By definition that is faith. So why does the Bible get such a hard time? Is there such a gap between science and miracles?

We have a book that is full of examples of miracles but for some reason it is such a stretch for billions of individuals to believe. People retort that the Bible was written by men. Well so were science books. Well aren’t science books written by men that had experiences and saw things with their owns eyes? Sure, but the Bible was also written by men that saw with their own eyes and had experiences as well. But didn’t those men have self serving purposes to control peoples thoughts and put their mind in a box? Who actually makes that argument and why? Does Christianity leave some assumptions and expect faith to bridge the gap? It sure does… and after having read a bit on evolution there are some serious assumptions there too. OK, but at the end of all the arguing isn’t religion focused on getting peoples money? You mean there is no money in big science?

To conclude I want to say that this wasn’t intended as a religion vs. science or creationism vs. evolution post but it is the most convenient topic to lean on. The only point I intended to make is that no matter where you stand you believe in stuff from a book written by men or women at some point in history. So take it a little easy if your ripping into a Christian for believing in a book. At the end of the day when all the arguing is done everyone has faith in a book.

a new link and a confession

Friday, April 9th, 2010

A co-worker of mine passed along a link today that was a pretty heavy read. It comes from a website called Web of Evidence: What They Don’t Want You To Know. I have frequented this site with some regularity over the last year and am now going to add it to the list of sites and blogs in the menu to the left. The article for today is titled “Death Of The Internet: Unprecedented Censorship Bill Passes in UK“. In a sentence the UK has given their government the authority to censor the internet as it sees fit. The article is quite long and goes through a lot of stuff about how things have got to this point and there is a good video towards the bottom I suggest you watch (note: in the video the person speaking is Jay Rockefeller of the Rockefeller family). To a person like myself that is of great concern because I run a site that holds Christian values and a conspiratorial view towards governments and corporations. So I wonder how long my site has left.

This was a big wake up call to me today because frankly I have been lazy with this site over the last 6 months and it is now painfully clear to me that I have a freedom that has the sun possibly setting on it. So I have a new love and vigor for this site, to use it as well as I can while it is still allowed to be online. Who knows when this kind of law will be coming to North America? All goodness in this kind of law, like taking down child porn sites, is merely a mirage for the true motive.

The true motive behind a law like this is to suppress knowledge. Thanks for the heads up George Orwell. The government doesn’t like us thinking for ourselves and communicating freely between each other. Knowledge is power and freedom gives us the opportunity to educate ourselves. When we have this freedom we talk about things like 9/11 and how bogus “their” story is and further more how the entire last decade has been shaped on the back of that atrocity towards humanity and all the other events that have come falling down in the wake of that event like a long chain of dictatorial dominoes.

Keep your head up folks. Things will continue to happen and change faster and faster that will see us having a smaller and smaller cage to live in. Learn and speak up now while you can. That is what I am going to do. I have a job to do with the time I have and that is to spread Christ’s word and knowledge that shows the world to be set up in opposition to him because right now Satan hold the reigns. Stop ignoring or guessing why the world is so broken.

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 2 Corinthians 4:4 (see 2 Corinthians 4:1-6 for full context)

ten commandments – Sabbath Day

Friday, April 9th, 2010

The Sabbath is a large topic that has had much study and debate over the course of time. What I am aiming to focus on here is really quite simple. God wants us to rest… from everything. The world and our lives are so noisy that we never just sit and rest. Even what we think is rest really isn’t. A lot of time people plan elaborate vacations to unwind. Some people sit and watch TV, while some may read a book and others go for a run or engage in some other sport or hobby. A lot of the time those activities require pre-planning and finances which in turn require us to work harder just to get to the thing we enjoy.  God wants us to rest. He knows we run ourselves ragged in every way.

God wants us to connect with him. He wants us to come to him every week with thanks, needs, questions and seeking forgiveness. We can’t manage our lives on our own. We kill ourselves perusing what we think will make us happy when the only thing that brings peace is God’s loving and accepting presence. That is why the Sabbath is an important day to be observed.

It’s not a day to put on uncomfortable cloths and drag our feet to church because we feel guilty or it will make grandma happy. The Sabbath is a day to connect with God and recharge in his presence. To use a sports metaphor, its like a runner at first base taking a lead off but going back to re-tag the base after every pitch… it keeps him safe.

As you have seen through this series of posts about the Ten Commandments that God only wants what is best for us. The creator knows what is good for his creation. This falls in line with all of that. He desires relationship with us. He wants us safe, happy and healthy in his presence. Three more commandments to go!
