A little candle is a blog dedicated to my views on faith and world events that are inescapibly tied together moving humanity toward a conclusion that most people are not aware of. It is my desire to help people see the world differently and how practical, essential and real Christianity is.
Well folks. It’s here. The year that the internet has been a buzz over for about a decade now. I know I first started reading about the 2012 phenomenon/Mayan prophesies in about 2004. I can’t believe how fast 8 years have gone by.
I am wondering, if I have any readers out there, what your thoughts, concerns, hopes or fears are for this year?
I guess if I am asking you to share the only reasonable thing for me to do is go first.
Tomorrow marks the ten year anniversary of one of the most tragic and horrific days in human history. Many things have occurred throughout human history that you could call more tragic from a loss of life standpoint but what makes 9/11 so different than other events is the fact that is was televised as it happened. We all shared in the pain and shock of that day one way or another. So many people continue to suffer this day. Something else that makes the events of 9/11 differ from other tragedies is the fact that what occurred that day were the actions of people against other people. What occurred that day is unthinkable, yet a group of people conceived that idea and carried it out. Which group carried it out remains an open debate to this day.
My favorite show on T.V. is Breaking Bad. Watching this show has helped me come to a revelation about how to world works. I understand that it’s a fictitious show but I believe that it shows a very real side of human nature and the way we affect each other, completely unaware of it.
To get this point across I am going to do my best to briefly summarize what has transpired in the show which is now through three full seasons. The show gets its name from the term breaking bad which essentially means to make an abrupt change from good moral behaviour to that of bad.
Merry Christmas from a little candle. I know it’s not to politically correct to say Merry Christmas these days, but I don’t care for political correctness all that much when it comes to my faith. What is December 25th? It’s Christmas Day… and here in Canada all the fuss since Halloween has been a build up to the 25th… Christmas.
I don’t know where all this hate and fussiness over the term “Merry Christmas” has come from although I have my ideas. It seems kind of odd to me that there is a fuss over the term at all. If someone came up to me and said Happy Hanuka I wouldn’t be offended. I wouldn’t be anything at all really because I am not Jewish. I wouldn’t see as it offensive because it doesn’t relate to me, I’m indifferent. So if you are not Christian or Catholic or any other denomination that observes Christmas just get over it. If you don’t believe in Jesus someone saying Merry Christmas to you should mean as little as someone saying “Happy Frosty Day” in respect to Frosty the Snowman. If Christ is someone you think never existed or was not who he said he was then just turn a deaf ear to all of this or go live somewhere that Christmas is not a prominent holiday. It is interesting to me that I have never actually met a person that has an issue with the term “Merry Christmas”. Have you? I wonder if that theroy is only something that exists in the news media to start something where there is nothing. I know for sure without a doubt that if I moved somewhere and complained about there traditions I would be in big trouble.
Lastly, why I think there is any fuss over the term Merry Christmas is because Jesus is the one true God and savior of any who will have him. I have said it numerous times on this site that a life lived for Christ by every man, woman and child is the solution to every problem we face and the people that are attempting to control us know this because they are working in opposition to what Christ taught so they must remove Jesus to be successful in their efforts. Christianity is opposed all over the world because the truth destroys lies, the lies we are constantly being fed. I wonder if in our lifetime we will see an attempt to rename the occasion on the 25th all together. I wouldn’t be surprised but I hope it never comes to that. Merry Christmas to everyone who read this. Have a blessed new year as well. I have some good posts lined up for early 2011.
I was thinking the other day about how fascinated people are with hero’s. The best stories always revolve around a hero and the justice that is delivered by said hero. Well all shuffle our feet to movie theatres and fill row upon row and spend billions annually gawking at screens that show stories about hero’s. If you think this is an exaggeration try and write down as quickly as you can 10 movie titles… I bet more than half of them surround a hero of some degree. All stories involve a main character and a protagonist/conflict opposite them and we all ride the edge of our seats for approximately two hours hoping our hero wins. Be it action/adventure, horror/thriller, drama/comedy or even romance this principle is true. (more…)
I think I often come across as pessimistic on this site and today I intend to prove myself justified. If you think for any reason life on our planet is going to get any better without the direct intervention of God then consider this story that I heard on the news last week.
Frito Lays chip company is pulling their environmentally friendly chip bags from shelves because people have been complaining that the packaging is too loud. This is so infuriating too me. People have been so softened and moulded by advertising and media into a mentality where they think every single little facet of their lives has to be a perfect convenience.
My feeling is that if people can’t stand a potato chip bag that is on the loud side but completely compostable and good for the environment then what are people willing to do for the benefit of their planet, each other and generations to come? It just seems so typical of our North American culture to not want to buy chips because the package is too noisy.
I grew up watching cartoons like G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers. If those shows gave me anything it was the lesson that there is an eternal struggle between good and evil, good guys and bad guys, right and wrong. I also learned that the good guys always win, usually in just under thirty minutes including commercials which told me I could own my very own good guy action figure.
As I have grown up and been able to watch the world through the T.V., internet, newspapers and a set of adult eyes I see the very struggle of good and evil present on our planet. However as I get older and little wiser I have been starting to wonder if there is even such a thing as bad guys. When I think about it, I don’t think anyone would ever view themselves as the bad guy. The bad guy after all is always someone else. The bad guy is the opponent. The bad guy is someone that wants to hurt someone else, take what belongs to others or worst of all, enslave or kill people. Well that can’t stand, we need some good guys that will go and fight in defense. But then aren’t those good guys viewed as the bad guys by the other side?
Anyone who knows me well knows that back in 2003 I became ill and started down a path that led doctors and medical experts to determine that I had Multiple Sclerosis or MS. I use had for a reason. Since late 2003 when all my symptoms left my body I have been without symptoms for going on 7 years. I am thankful for that but have always wondered in the back of my mind if someday it would come back. After all, multiple sclerosis has that name because it happen multiple times. Then last winter I had a revelation at the onset of the flu season.
It’s not so long ago that anyone has forgot that before last winter we could not tune into the news and not hear about the swine flu. With all that hype a video surfaced on the internet about a previous swine flu scare in 1976. I watched this video as I recommend you should too. My story will pick up on the other side of the video players.
Once I heard of this woman’s account of Guillain-Barré syndrome I made a connection. Her symptoms while more sever than mine we’re incredibly similar.
I remember it was in late February or early March of 2003 I was at my desk at work on a Thursday afternoon when my feet started to feel numb, like they had the circulation slightly cut off. I took of my shoes and rubbed my feet, I got up and walked around but couldn’t shake the sensation. I went to bed that night sure it would be gone in the morning. I woke up the next day and it was worse. It had even spread its way up into my calf’s. By the time I got to work on the Friday the tingling sensation was up into my thighs. I dealt with it for the Friday and over the weekend but by the time Monday rolled around it was becoming clear it was not going to go away. I left work that Monday morning to go to a clinic and by the time I was through the clinic and to the hospital I felt numbness from my chest down. To make a long story short I underwent a number of tests over the weeks and months to come, which included a spinal tap and an MRI, I was eventually told that I likely have MS. At the height of it all I was partially numb from the chest down to such a degree that I could not feel water hitting my body in the shower. I even had very slight loss of mobility in my hands and fingers.
The revelation I had after seeing this video was that the winter of 2002/2003 was the last time I had a seasonal flu shot. Now I am not a doctor and can not give myself a 100% accurate diagnosis I feel pretty confident that I do not have MS given the research that I have done. I feel even more secure in that given that I am in my 7th year of being symptom free. As a side note I am yet to have the flu in the last seven years as well.
While most of my symptoms were MS like in nature I have done some reading on GBS and learned it fits the bill perfectly too. I have spent a good deal of time wondering why that was not even presented to me as an option while I was going through my tests. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that GBS is linked to the bodies response to foreign antigens in the body. Wikipedia states that one study suggests that some cases are triggered by the influenza virus, or by an immune reaction to the influenza virus. Considering that the flu shot is given with live influenza in the vaccine I give that possibility a lot of credit. Did I have an episode of GBS? I have not had the opinion of a medical doctor on that front but to me, it seems highly probable.
Not being a doctor I want to be clear, don’t take my advice as gospel. You need to educate yourself and make your own decisions based on good information (which is hard to come by). Last seasons Swine Flu scare came and went with minor incident. Did some people die? Yes. But the death toll cause by Swine Flu (H1N1) still trailed the typical seasonal flu by a large margin. I pulled the following from WikiAnswers:
3 March 2010 — As of 12 February 2010, According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated* that since the beginning of the pandemic, the US has had approximately 57 million cases of A-H1N1/09 Pandemic Swine Flu and approximately 11,690 resulting deaths. Based upon this, an estimate of the mortality rate in the US from the pandemic is 0.02%. In comparison, the CDC and World Health Organization (WHO) have estimated that with seasonal flu, “we see over 30 million cases in the United States. We see 200,000 hospitalizations and, on average, 36,000 deaths.” (During the entire fall and winter flu season.) Based upon this, the average mortality rate of seasonal flu in the US would be 0.12%
Based on those numbers the regular flu claimed the lives of over three times as many people as H1N1 but there wasn’t any major news coverage or panic around those figures. I think it is worth mentioning too that many victims of the flu don’t die by the flu alone. It is usually the flu in combination with some other complicating health factors primarily when the flu and some sort of viral infection occur at the same time.
The vaccine subject can be a very touchy one. Some people are for it and think its a great medical achievement. Others think that they aren’t great and we don’t yet fully understand the long term effects that vaccines will take on people. I say get out there and do some research. I for one put a lot of weight on the first hand accounts of people. I think that we need to get the TV and medical establishment out of the way and start hearing the stories of individuals that have had good and bad experiences through vaccines and weigh the positives and negatives before rolling up our sleeves at the recommendations of the government and TV. For me I can’t shake this feeling that the higher ups are just a little to eager to have us lining up for our annual “safety shots”. Again, I want you to think for yourself and start doing your homework. The new flu season is only a couple months away so get on this now before we are in the heat of the moment with the TV screaming doom at us. It’s your life and your body. I myself am unlikely to ever accept another vaccine, but only the circumstances will tell for sure.
I want to do a quick post just to clarify something about this blog. This blog is not intended to come off as negative or scare/frighten people. This blog is about what the world is and what the world could be. What the world is today in my view is very broken. We do our best to put a good spin on things but when we take a hard look under the shiny veneer we put on everything we can see that this world is a tough place. I want people to look at the harsh realities so collectively as a group we can do a better job at taking care of each other and the planet. Part of this process is learning about things we would rather not know about. I for one am not going to prescribe myself to the philosophy of H.L. Mencken.
It is the nature of the human species to reject what is true but unpleasant and to embrace what is obviously false but comforting.
So please look at this site as a positive opportunity to get educated and get a new perspective. You are never going to learn anything from the T.V., movies or video games that will help change the course we are all currently on. Jesus Christ left us with the job of loving God and loving our neighbours as ourselves. All I am seeking to do is contrast the teachings of Christ and the Bible with the current conditions and circumstances we face to demonstrate the truth that is found in the Bible. So for this to be accomplished I have to dabble in both the positive and negative.
This video is fairly old now as it’s stated in the video that they are on day 53 of the oil spill which made it to a stunning 87 days before being capped. If you think there weren’t major PR efforts on BPs part to try and control the situation from a media standpoint you’d sadly be mistaken.
You know I remember some simple truths that I was taught as a kid when it came to making a mistake and being in trouble. That lesson was that it was better to admit it and seek help rather than hiding it or lying about it. I guess that doesn’t apply to a company when billions of dollars and the opinions of the many shareholders and the entire human race are at stake. It’s my two cents that I would be more sympathetic of a company that would just admit how bad the problem is and say we messed up and we need a lot of help to fix this. But that isn’t what they did. They decided to buy search engine search terms to try and control what information people we’re getting when the searched for “oil spill” and other relevant terms.
At the end of the day an estimated 18 million gallons of oil has spilled into the waters of our planet. And those are the modest low end estimates. That figure is based on the belief that the well was spewing about 5000 barrels worth/day into the gulf (a barrel contains 42 gallons). A senior BP offical admitted to congress that the well could have been flowing as much as 60,000 barrels/day. If that is true the total in gallons would be in the neighbourhood of 219 million. It’s so disgusting to think what has happened to our planet because of our dependence on this substance.
Did you know that North America (U.S and Canada) used 21.7 million barrels worth of oil/day in 2008 according to rates posted in a wikipedia page? Using the high estimates, the recent spill would total 5.2 million barrels. That means the spill only represents 24% of our daily… yes daily use as a continent. I am not saying that in anyway to downplay the size or severity of the spill. Rather I am using it to contrast it to the astronomical volume we use. Where is the desperation for using a cleaner or renewable energy source(s) by our leadership?
Now consider if that oil had not been spilled into our water it would have been used in products that pollute our ground and add to the volume in landfills. Or it would have ended up in vehicles, machines and power plants that emit pollution into the air. So at the end of the day we have 21.7 million barrels/day (911,400,000 gallons) that end up hurting the planet in one way or another any way. Does that fact taint the luxury that we enjoy as a continent at all? I know it does for me.
